F.G. WALTON SMITH
F.G. WALTON SMITH was built for the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric ScienceĀ and is named for the school’s founder. The catamaran is capable of reaching speeds of over 10 knots and has a draft of 7 feet. This shallow draft enables the vessel to be used in the exploration of reefs, mangroves, grassbeds and other shallow environments. The vessel has ten staterooms which accommodate 20 people and has over 800 square feet of laboratory space.
Some features of the vessel include twin Cummins engines at 760 hp each, Servogear variable pitch propellers, a 3,000 gallon tank of fresh water with a reverse osmosis watermaker and 10,000 gallons of fuel storage. It also has the capability of dynamic positioning for precise station keeping, using bow thrusters, controllable pitch propellers, and independent rudders.
