FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 21, 2023
WASHINGTON – The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) today announced Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. received SCA’s 2023 “Improvement in Safety” award. SCA, the national association representing the U.S. shipyard and repair industry, honors companies with annual safety awards for enhancement of operations and promotion of safety and accident prevention.
Through its proactive approaches and dedication to improved safety and health of its employees, Eastern Shipbuilding Group Inc. is one of seventeen shipyards and repair facilities awarded for its continued advancement of employee safety in the shipyard industry.
“Workforce health and safety is woven into the fabric of our industry because the teams that work in our shipyards and throughout the industrial base are the most important asset we have in building and repairing the U.S. commercial and military fleets,” said Matthew Paxton, president of the Shipbuilders Council of America. “We are incredibly proud of Eastern Shipbuilding Group for its commitment and investment into advancing safety that make our industry an example for other industries to follow.”
“Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our employees and community. Our team members adhere to strict safety protocols while building quality ships for our customers. Receiving recognition for our efforts in workplace safety is very rewarding.” said Joey D’Isernia, CEO, Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc.
The shipbuilding industry has seen a decrease in recorded injuries and safety issues, showcasing a downward trend over the past decade. This unwavering commitment to safety has allowed the industry to adapt and address the obstacles that arose throughout the year while continuing operations.
SCA member companies are eligible for a Safety Award if they submit the SCA Injury & Illness survey for all four quarters, have zero fatalities throughout the year, and either have a total recordable incident rate (TRIR) below the SCA average, or if they reduce their year-on-year TRIR by 10% or more.
Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) members constitute the shipyard industrial base that builds, repairs, maintains and modernizes U.S. Navy ships and craft, U.S. Coast Guard vessels of all sizes, as well as vessels for other U.S. government agencies. In addition, SCA members build, repair and service America’s fleet of commercial vessels. The Council represents 40 companies that own and operate over 80 shipyards, with facilities on all three U.S. coasts, the Great Lakes, the inland waterways system, Alaska and Hawaii. SCA also represents 87 partner members that provide goods and services to the shipyard industry. You can learn more by visiting www.shipbuilders.org.
